The latest GoDaddy.com scam

Do you ever wonder if a company can read your thoughts? Like, “Hmm, Godaddy is expensive and my website is really slow, maybe I should move my hosting to Cloudways.”

I have the thought, but like most thoughts, I don’t act on it. Then a month later, I wake up and my website is gone. No warning from Godaddy, not an error message, nothing. No content on FTP, no Wordpress admin login, no error message, no backups available, just gone.

But, there is a helpful customer support specialist available on chat. After poking around for a while, the specialist asks about my second site.

“What second site?” I ask.

“The /content site,” the support person responds. “I can’t access your original site, but I can restore the /content site to your original for a fee.”

“How much is the fee?” I ask, already knowing the answer. I’m not the only person to be the victim of this shakedown. It will be $150.

“$149,” the support specialist replies.

Wow, I get a dollar discount.

I pay the money, partly because the site belongs to my company (so it’s not really my own money), but more because I don’t want to waste a week rebuilding from scratch. It should be restored within 24-hours.
