I recently recorded a podcast with Chris Carter — Kijabe kid, RVA grad, ultramarathoner, rock-climber, hero of both mine and my girls — about his time hiking the Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico to Canada. I followed the journey on social media, and was blessed with an amazing conversation with Chris as he returned to Africa. Following are several of my favorite “Chris-isms” about time on the trail.

You can’t just have this sudden burst of energy and make it to Canada.

We have to embrace the journey, embrace the patience, embrace the suffering.

Your feet are like, “bro, what are you doing to me!” That’s when it comes to the point, if it hasn’t been a dream for a while, you’ll drop out.

If you’re going out there expecting to be fulfilled everyday, expecting to be on this high, expecting to be stoked, you’re going to drop out so fast. If you’re not ready to suffer most of the time, then it’s not going to happen.

Sometimes you’re on a ledge…
