Elegy for a friend’s brother

ashes scatter on dunes
dust of life
ended too soon

disorder of things
never desired
parents preside
funeral of child

wave, crash on the beach
shark, circle coral reef
cloud, roll above and by

remind us,
all around death
is life

A friend recently lost her brother, it affected me deeply, it’s like looking into a crystal ball at an outcome I fear in my own family. She shared an image of her dying father scattering his son’s ashes on the dunes. Just heartbreaking.

It is hard to make sense of the senseless.

In some ways, it is even harder to accept the inevitable.

The truth of mortality often seems too much to bear.
