A Really, Really Easy Way to Hurt Yourself

Strava and New Balance team up to injure the world.

I’m not an elite runner, but I’ve been around running long enough to see or experience most injuries.

Shin splints, hip flexors, hamstrings, stress fractures, plantar fasciitis, low-blood-sugar-induced seizures.

Most running injuries are overuse or overstress from a body not prepared for the pounding.

Personally, my body can handle a 6+mile run three times a week. I can’t maintain the sleep or diet to provide adequate recovery if I run much faster or harder.

For a recreational runner, 60–70 miles per month is pretty respectable.

Like many athletes, I use Strava, the social workout-sharing app where you can give your friends Kudos for a good run or ride. It is a fun way to keep up with others and to challenge yourself at times. My friends use Beacon so they can be found if they’re injured. We all use the rankings to see how we did on a certain route.
